What is a capacitor?
Capacitor is an electronic element composed of two conductors (lining) divided with a dielectric. Transferring the voltage to the lining of a capacitor causes electric charge condensation. We have aluminum, mika and folic electrolytic capacitors.
Basic parameters of capacitors:
Capacity C [F] – a unit of capacity is Farad [F], in practice smaller units are used, i.e.: mF (10-3 F), µF (10-6 F), nF (10-9 F), pF (10-12 F). Capacity is provided with an allowed tolerance.
Rated voltage Un [V] – max voltage value, which can occur on a capacitor in a continuous way without changing its characteristics. Due to a huge diversity of capacitors’ types, rated voltage can be a continuous voltage, alternating, with a given frequency, or pulse.
Substitute series resistance ESR [Ω] – represents entire losses in a capacitor, which except series resistance of channeling and Rs electrodes, concerning losses in a dielectric, occuring during being affected by the alternating electric field.
Series substitute induction ESL [H] – concerning induction channeling and capacitor’s electrodes.
Rated current In [A] – max effective current value, which can flow through a capacitor in a continuous way.
In terms of a dielectric type, we can divide capacitors into the following groups:
Aluminum electrolytic capacitor – in a capacitor of this type, dielectrics are aluminum oxides with thickness depending on a rated voltage of a capacitor. Channels of electrolytic capacitors are marked and should be connected with a DC source by a positive electrode to a plus pole, and negative electrode to minul pole. The biggest advantage of electrolytic capacitors is a possibility to acquire a big capacitor’s capacity in proportion to its sizes. It's possible thanks to a huge surface of electrodes and using dielectric with small thickness. The range of rated capacities in the offered capacitors equals from 33 µF to 220 000 µF, and rated voltages from 10V to 500V. These capacitors can be applied in electronic devices. Capacitors for industrial use are a special type of capacitors. These capacitors, thanks to a special construction of electrodes, have small series resistance and impendation values, which allows for acquiring huge current ripples. The range of rated capacities is from 100 µF to 1 500 000 µF, and alternating voltages from 10 V to 500 V. This type of condensators can be used in power electronics, e.g. UPS, inverters, pulse power supplies.
Mika capacitor – has a construction similar to ceramic capacitor, but due to a different production process it can also silver electrodes. Mika's capacitors are characterized by big insulation resistance, small losses and big stability of parameters. Capacities of offeter capacitors are placed from 51 pF to 0,51 µF, and voltages from 250 V to 15 kV. Because of their characteristics, they’re used mainly in high frequency systems.
Folic capacitor – a capacitor with a dielectric made of plastics – most often made from polypropylene, metal polypropylene or polyester. Capacitors with a dielectric made of plastics characterized by small losses, which comes from small resistance of electrodes and bug resistance insulation. In these capacitors it is possible to achieve big currents (up to several thousands of Amperes) and rated voltages (up to several dozens of thousands of volts), which allows for using them in power electronic systems as commutation, extinguishing and filtering capacitors for induction heating and high-voltage systems.
