Photoelectric sensors can be used in various areas of industrial automation.
The photoelectric sensor works by measuring the intensity of the light of the beam emitted by the transmitter falling on the photosensitive element of the receiver. They are equipped with a light source emitter and its receiver. If the light beam is interrupted, the sensor is triggered. Optical sensors are used both in advanced automation as well as in simple applications. They can also be used in home automation.
Depending on the purpose of the photoelectric sensor, different types of light are used and the beam is modulated. Most often, infrared light is used, invisible to the human eye.
Many photoelectric sensors are equipped with LEDs that indicate the status of their work, including the correct cooperation of the transmitter and receiver. Observing these LEDs and their lighting colors facilitates the proper installation of sensors and the determination of the output status or correctness of the reaction to the object, which is especially important when the sensitivity is adjustable.
Application of a photoelectric sensor
The most common application of a photoelectric sensor is the detection of foreign body placement in a certain work area. In such an arrangement, a light source is associated with the sensor, which is the transmitter. If any object is in the optical path between the transmitter and receiver, there is a change in the light intensity that is detected. Depending on the structure of the optical path, the light beam is interrupted, reflected or scattered.
A common solution is to use infrared diodes as synchronous transmitters, so that the output signal is largely independent of external lighting, as visible light is easy to filter.
In difficult conditions, reflective sensors or light barriers working with red light, emitted by a light diode, are used, because it is easy to see such a beam of light and the point at which it falls.
